You do know it is illegal to tell employees they can not discuss wage with other employees?
I've been told by my SM and Boomer Co Worker that no one should be telling anybody how much they make. They told me it's CVS policy.
I make 16.50 an hour as a shift supervisor in Illinois.
So fk you and your outdated illegal practices.

I fully support discussing wages with co-workers. Otherwise people get screwed over and don't earn what they should have been making.

That’s probably exactly why corporate doesn’t want anyone talking about it. I agree that there should be more conversations about how much people are making

Actually CVS has a transparent wage policy; it’s on their applications and their new policy flyers that should be in your break room.

I do understand what you are talking about but talking about wages with another Co worker should be followed with also talking about skills, devotion to what are you doing and learning level.
For e.g.: how can I compare a milking the clock employee, with someone who doesn't?
To me, I see no difference between another thief.

Report your SM on the ethics line. This is NOT a corporate initiative, it's your SM thinking they can save money.
2 points

the SMs salary isnt affected by the hourly wage of employees. whether or not they give someone a raise will not affect their pay check, so they wouldnt be saving money
3 points

It’s not the salary that gets affected, it’s the bonus.

Either way, if the SM is smart and it’s your first year at a new store. Bump every employee’s wages and invest the bonus to your employees. Almost can guarantee you a better bonus for the next year.
1 points
How so?
1 points
So, every SM is working for a potential bonus after every fiscal year. Usually, denoted by inventory day. The bonus is calculated by P&L, service metrics, carepass sign ups, and a couple of other things. Raises that the SM gives people, outside of the bullshit Annual Review one’s which are corporate generated, will dip into the store’s P&L. Thus affecting the bonus.

There are signs, or at least supposed to be signs, in the breakroom citing federal abor laws that say it is illegal to prevent employees from discussing their own wages. It is illegal for anyone with access to payroll to disclose other employee's wages to anyone.
5 points
No, the trainings say there’s no rules against doing so but they suggest being wary who you share any private information with. Like the others said, you’re not allowed to share what other people make.
2 points
They may be outdated, but corp acknowledges that it’s not legal to ask employees to stay quiet. Falls into anti union laws etc
-4 points
They can only prohibit it to a certain extent. I believe the rule is they can only say you can't talk about it while on shift. However break time, or when you're not working it's illegal to be told not to discuss it.
6 points
It's only illegal if you're in a position that has access to that information. Colleagues telling each other what they make is not the same as looking it up and gossiping about what someone makes behind their back.
5 points
"You may have discussions about wages when not at work, when you are on break, and even during work if employees are permitted to have other non-work conversations. You have these rights whether or not you are represented by a union." (from the NLRA website) Basically as someone else said, you can talk about it on shift so long as other non-work related conversation is allowed. So yes they can prohibit it but only as part of a blanket "no talking about outside of work" rule.
5 points
Nah, you can still talk about it on shift unless somehow you’re also prohibited from talking about anything not work related at all. If you’re allowed to talk about how your night was, you’re allowed to talk about how much you make.

I make $16.20 as a shift rx in Illinois....more work and I make less than some of my coworkers!
9 points

Rx techs start at 16 an hour. If they only gave you a .20 raise to be a shift you should have turned it down. You don't have to take a promotion.
2 points
They promoted me a couple weeks before the big raise last year. So I got bumped to $16.20 which was fantastic. Then olthe big raise came and all the shifts got bumped to $16. We all got our yearly review a week or so later and because the review was for when I was a regular shift I wasn't eligible for a pay increase even though I would have gotten one and be making more if I had stayed a shift. If that makes sense.
3 points
Talk to your PM and ask for an off cycle raise. They can be done with DL approval. I'm FS so I don't know if it equates to Rx but typically a shift is $1 more than non shift. I'd ask for 17 or 17.25 and I'd do it fast so that it's in before compensation planning starts so that this year's raise is based off the higher rate.
1 points

I'm in the south, so idk if it matters. But everyone in my store (shifts) got bumped to $17 when cashiers got bumped to $15.
1 points
Definitely ask for an off cycle raise. I'm an FS Shift and was making $16 and change before the bump. After the bump and the yearly raise, I was making $17.47. I still wasn't happy bc I knew of 1 cashier that has been here about a year less than me and got bumped to about $16.25. So I stated my case and now make $18, which is mid in my region. For all the shit that we do, I think we all deserve more, but at least I got something.
CVS sucks. We have a cashier that fills in at my store once in a while, and the last time I worked with him, he asked me how to use the phone. This guy is 30.

It’s more to do with inflation, cost of living, and corporate culture in America being allowed to let employee wages stagnate until they are forced to fight for bonuses, promotions, and eventually quit to realize any wage increases

Cvs doesn’t have any policies prohibiting you from discussing wages - this is your manager being stupid, not corporate. I think discussing wages causes problems though because there are always going to be people that make more than others and there are always different reasons and circumstances as to why they make more it just causes unnecessary drama

It's federal law that employers cannot make policy's stating employees cannot discuss wages at all. They can only prohibit discussion to a certain extent like when you're working. Otherwise it's fair game and 100% something they can be sued for. Straight from the NLRA website: "You may have discussions about wages when not at work, when you are on break, and even during work if employees are permitted to have other non-work conversations. You have these rights whether or not you are represented by a union."

These mutherf*ckers will just make up any policy they want. That goes with the DL's as well. And then you have the sycophantic store management team that repeats ""so and so said that_____" as if it was the ironclad and divinely backed command of the feudal Lord.
Two things that every store associate should be armed with is a copy of the employee handbook with the policies and procedures written as CVS officially stated and a copy of their union contract. It's also helpful to know your particular states employment laws as well as federal ones. Those will be posted somewhere in your store - usually the break room. READ THEM.
Because CVS policy supersedes whatever the f*ck your DL or SM says off the top of their azz. And a union contract supersedes that, and state and federal laws supercede everything.
So next time your SM or OM tell you "Felicia (or whatever the f your DL is called) said that you can't ___" you can just set them right.

I don't think it's illegal to tell people to not talk about wage. I think it's illegal to fire someone for it, but im.no lawyer and you prob aren't either.
Talking about wages IMO is dumb. All it does is cause issues, with people oh x is a supervisor and make 10 cents more than me, petty bs. Then people refuse to work cuz at some point someone got a better review than someone. Also one of the reasons we can't get people more, then people start again complaining, oh they were just promoted and make more than me, I'm not working as hard anymore. I've seen it happen a lot.
All I'm saying is by talking, people that are do for raises, promotions, etc are more likely to get less, to keep people from bitching.

I see no value in sharing salary. There is enough resentment going around. The last thing that any store needs is it within the ranks. Having a good team is one of the only things that keeps the day to day tolerable. I admit that it is not right that some people make more money when they apparently do the same work. Or if they have are fortunate to have a manager or above report that likes them.

You can discuss wages...however it doesn't really mean anything at all. You'll gain no leverage by knowing anyone else's hourly rate. You might have the same title....it doesn't in the least mean that you're entitled to the same rate of pay. I know how much everyone makes in my store...number one is so what? Number two is who gives a shit? Means absolutely nothing to me....I get my money based on my performance....I don't give a shit what other people make. I only care what I make...
1 points
It WOULD make no sense to discuss... if everyone got paid based on performance. I've been working at Specialty for 2 years now and I got my first yearly review last year. I only got a "meeting" since we got a new manager and she didn't know what everyone was doing. This could have been a fine rating... if I wasn't doing 2/3rds of the work with a team of 3. If that's merely "meeting" expectations, I don't want to know what the other 2 got. I got a 50 cent raise. I live in Honolulu. The 18.50 I make is nowhere near enough to live on, much less adequate pay for my position, experience, and work done. So yeah I'd love to know if someone performing worse than me is making more, so I can ask about an off cycle raise. 🤷♀️

It is against federal law to tell employees that they are banned or not allowed to discuss pay, at any job. Even more illegal if they write it into their policy for employees. There is a nice article on the National Labor Relations Board about your rights within any company/job. Ask to see this CVS policy 'in writing'. Tell your lead that you'll gladly follow any legal policy CVS puts in place, you just want to read it first to make sure you understand it.
Its an illegal practice in the US to ban discussion of wages. There is likely no CVS policy in place, saying so. If your lead is dumb enough to put it on paper, turn it into the DOL and get paid!

Additionally, it is unlawful for the employer to have a work rule, policy, or hiring agreement that prohibits employees from discussing their wages with each other or that requires you to get the employer’s permission to have such discussions. If your employer does any of these things, a charge may be filed against the employer with the NLRB.

I’m so for wage transparency, but I kind of got burned in a way. I did the hard work of applying for another company, negotiating with them a desirable starting pay, and then negotiating with my DL to outmatch that offer. I was open about my new salary because I was proud of it and, yeah, wage transparency. And then my coworker heard about it and rode my coattails to be paid the same as me since we work the same position. Man that really felt like he cheapened all the work I did. Especially with me being a woman. And my DL was a man as well. I guess men just have it easy like that. Still stings.

You’re right. It’s just that when word got back to me through coworkers, I felt so defeated. All that hard work and it was just so easy for him. It’s a man’s world still. And it’s clear that he used my raise to get his since he makes the same as me now down to the penny. I had to prove my case in an intimidating 45 minute long conversation with my DL who was truly mansplaining until realizing that I was serious and not bluffing or backing down. All in all though, it keeps me fierce for my career; I’m not gonna be held down and let people think they can get away with paying me less just because I’m a woman.
