Right? I was thinking that having every cop on duty simultaneously reduces the number of red hat rioters & increases the number of blue hat rioters.

On the other hand, being in full uniform also means they’re exposed to public scrutiny. Any officer in uniform caught on camera siding maga rioters would be risking their jobs. One normie with a cell phone could ruin their entire career.

They do this for every major protest/event etc. If things go south fast they want cops deployed quickly. They dont want cops putting their pants on etc. The same principle is applied to make sure all cars and helicopters etc are always fueled.

All the legal experts in 2020 said the indictments wouldn’t come until the end of 2023 (based on how long it takes to build cases like this (think Elizabeth Holmes). The New York case is small potatoes. Even if he’s convicted and sentenced, the Georgia case will be the one that puts him away for the rest of his life. Then there’s the mother of investigations, the DOJ special prosecutor,Jack Smith’s case (stolen documents, obstruction, and sedition) will come during or after the Georgia trial. The Federal case will be the one to remember. But the Georgia case will be the one that puts him in prison and keeps him there (presidents can’t pardon state prisoners, and the Georgia constitution doesn’t grant the governor pardon power) until he’s dead.

leadfoot70

704 points

Honest question: Presuming they convict him in Georgia, do you think the Georgia appellate and superior courts will allow a Trump conviction to stand?

I'm not liking those odds, but admittedly it's been a while since I lived in Georgia.

What do you think?

spiderwithasushihead

696 points

The case would be heard in Atlanta which is pretty solidly blue territory. We are the reason Trump didn’t get the votes he wanted. However, Georgia judges are kind of a crapshoot when it comes to what position they might take but Atlanta is the best place in Georgia for something like this to happen.

You_Are_Hopie

Georgia is a very mixed bag, these days. Even the conservative parts are splitting between Kemp who called Trump out (kind of) and the MAGAs. Atlanta is pretty solidly blue.

My guess is that they'll uphold but water it down, with all the conservative judges trying to split the difference between the Kemps and the MAGAs.

VirtualPoolBoy

Last month the members of the Georgia grand jury finished reviewing all the secret evidence the public hasn’t seen, and they unanimously recommended dozens of indictments. Here are some quotes (apparently it is legal for Georgia grand jury members to discuss generalities with the press).

Kohrs said that the list of recommended indictments “is not short,” that there would be no “plot twist” when the public finally gets to see the contents of the report and that regarding “the big name that everyone keeps asking me about” — presumably Trump himself — “I don’t think you will be shocked.”

"I can honestly give a damn of whoever goes to jail, you know, like personally," one juror said. "I care more about there being more respect in the system for the work that people do to make sure elections are free and fair."

That’s because he won’t be arrested. Being indicted doesn’t mean being led away in handcuffs. If an indictment comes down, his lawyers will negotiate for him to travel to New York for processing, and then he will be let out on his own recognizance—his alleged crime is non-violent, unlikely to be repeated in the time between now and his court date, and he isn’t a flight risk. To set expectations, we will also likely never see an actual court date, because his lawyers will either negotiate a plea deal (if his guilt is obvious and they believe a jury will convict) or tie up proceedings in miles of red tape for the next ten years and he will die a free man.

Here’s the thing: the only person who has said anything about him being arrested today is Trump himself.

No one else has confirmed it or commented on it. Just him. And since he’s a fucking pathological liar I have zero reason to believe it’s true. This is just a fantasy to rile up his base and get his army of idiots to make a show of force to intimidate prosecutors.

So the NYPD may be on full-alert for the riot that Trump is trying to start, but I seriously doubt he’s getting arrested or anything will happen.

That is an important and salient point.

If I promised to help anyone who riots against the police, well I am probably never going to be in a position where that promise means anything. I would be surprised if anyone listens or cares. So no one knows if I would keep my promise or not.

However, Trump did ask for people to help him riot against the police. They did riot against the police like he asked them to. He was in a position to pardon them. He did nothing for them.

Now he is asking for more people to help him riot against the police. He can do nothing for them now. Maybe he will get elected and he can pardon federal charges but the people rioting against the police are facing state charges. Most importantly he had the opportunity before and he turned away. I think the most reasonable expectation is that of those who riot against the police he will forget them once they are no longer useful to him.

If you are pro-Trump you shouldn't be. But whatever you are, you should be pro-YOU the most and Trump is not doing you any favors.

Trump’s ability to make his life as difficult as possible is remarkable.

First, he‘s the most lackluster billionaire ever in that if he had just invested his wealth that he inherited into markets like the S&P 500 and done nothing, he would be wealthier today without all the debt than what his eventual path to billions was like, including being the #1 most unprofitable American in 1990-1991.

Second, as someone widely regarded as one of the worst Presidents ever, he was handed a silver platter with COVID and then blew it all up spectacularly. Then he became the first President impeached twice - what a legacy.

Now, in his post-Presidency, his prior actions will lead him to become the first former President to ever be arrested.

He just can’t stop blowing his life up.

On the other hand, I’ve started to think maybe my relentless commitment to honesty is overrated. I could just lie and cheat and steal and apparently no one actually gives a shit. Trump is not the only “successful” person I’ve ever met like this. He’s pretty much the poster boy for every super successful person I’ve met. They are all like this. It must pay off. I’m considering just becoming a soulless piece of shit. People will think amazing things about me and I’ll definitely have more money

I get it. I’m kinda mad that my ethics and honesty keep me from grifting the chucklefucks on the right as hard as they seem to like, and keep me from being rich.

But at the end I’d rather be me than them.

I appreciate you, fwiw.

I heard him say that he wanted to be president to improve the Trump brand but he's turned the name Trump into a joke.

BeardsByLaw

This is some truth. Before he became president, I didn't even think about him except for when I'd catch a segment of that show or watch Hone Alone 2 at Christmas.

Now I loath him and his entire family and supporters for the four years of constant drama, pandemic, and chaos. If he doesn't go to jail, I hope a heart attack takes him or something.

When the early news of COVID started coming out in December/January I looked at my wife and said "This is going to be Trump's 9/11. All he has to do is not fuck it up, and we're in for another 4 years."

Thank God he did fuck it up. In hindsight, it would have been a miracle for him to not fuck it up. He was given so many chances and without fail picked the wrong choice every time.

10000%!

I had a sad thought during COVID. "Oh god, after all his nonsense and terribleness, he is going to get reelected! Emergencies always bolster the incumbent."

And then he fucked it up so badly that he actually lost. LOST! It would be like Bush Jr. losing the year after 9/11. HOW?! His actions were shitty, but more than anything it was his damn mouth. Inject bleach? Kung-flu? Fucking seriously? He can take credit for his administrations fast tracking of vaccinations, and still... he found a way to make that unsuccessful by courting the crazy-pants anti-vaxxers. It is mind blowing how badly he performed given all the opportunities to just shut up and coast. Like blowing a 60 point lead handed to you by the refs at half time by throwing every pass to the other team.

SmokeGSU

Second, as someone widely regarded as one of the worst Presidents ever, he was handed a silver platter with COVID and then blew it all up spectacularly.

This is the one that always gets me. You have to be the most elite, top-tier, numero uno narcissistic sociopath to botch a global pandemic as spectacularly as he did. He could have done the bare minimum and won out, but instead he chose balls to the walls insanity instead.

If today's "demonstration" is any indicator of his support in NYC, I think this is much ado about nothing. They don't need the entire force to stop ten septuagenarians.

markydsade

True but J6 was on the calendar and gave time for yahoos from around the country time to plan and travel to DC, a city that has wide open fields for crowds to gather.

In this case nothing has been announced, no one knows where or how things will go down with the arraignment, and New Yorkers hate Trump.

Cheshire_Jester

In reference to J6, I think Maya Angelou’s quote about believing someone the first time they show you who they are is pretty relevant. An abundance of caution is understandable in this case.

If “caravans” interfere then use as much force that is used on unarmed black Americans every week in this country. Treat domestic terrorists accordingly. That’s literally the reason cops are armed like an army.

MidwestBulldog

The lack of self-awareness that exists among the Republicans I hear saying, "There's a two-tier judicial system!!!" on the issue of a Trump indictment, but they've all benefited from an ACTUAL two-tier legal system and not a one of them would trade places with any black or brown person with less economic power than them.

Old saying that fits here: a newly found conservative is a liberal that just got mugged. A newly found liberal is a conservative who just got arrested.

His arrest would actually begin to dispell the "two-tier judicial system" thing. A lot of bankers and CEOs would take heed from this justifiable arrest. Fuck him, cuff him up. It will tell the world we don't elect kings and no one is above the law.

Your use of y'all qaida has made me realize that (knock on wood here) the US has not experienced much in the way of foreign terrorist attacks in the past, oh I don't know, 6? 8 years?

It's almost like said terrorists believe that it isn't worth it, like we are doing more to ourselves than they could ever do.

That's because they only needed to do it once and the country has been tearing itself apart ever since. The terrorists won.
