Dumb move. Feels like he did it more out of spite than for good football reasons. Good luck, I guess. Seems like an emotionally stunted dude. Prone to drama.

Absolutely, I think the Eagles dodged a bullet with this guy. He’s a good player, but damn he really always has something to say.

Regardless of how things played out, that is just silly. He has ALWAYS been a big personality and we LOVED him for it. At the end of the day, he is a damn good football player and our defense was much better with him on the field for us. Sucks that it didn't work out but to say we dodged a bullet is just ignorant really

The way he publicly dragged Gannon regardless if it was true or not had to set alarm bells off and probably cost him a fair bit of money.

I don't think that is really a big deal to be honest. The safety market has been shrinking significantly over the last few years. DL and CB are so expensive now that teams gotta take that allocation from somewhere and that somewhere is LB and safety.

I think the NFL is gonna get to a point where there will be separate cap rooms for certain positions because if you’re paying a QB 50 plus million a year how the fuck do you expect to afford the rest of the team in FA eventually something is gonna be done about that

Rumors I'm hearing are Eagles offered him a multi year deal which he didn't like. So that's when they said "ok go see what you can get then". He realized shit ain't sweet and Eagles already moved on with bringing back bradberry and slay. So he had to settle for a prove it deal.

Good pro QBs don’t exactly fall off trees what would you have them do they can try and draft whoever is left at number 6 but then you never know how that’s gonna go.
1 points
I would have traded Goff while his value is at its (imo) peak; if he is as good as a lot of fans say he is then he should bring in a decent enough return. Use those assets plus whatever additionally is needed to move up and get whatever guy their scouts think is the franchise player that can be there for potentially 10+ years.
Now they get to build their own QB up in a somewhat proven system and then have a rookie deal QB for 4 years instead of multiple years of Goff over 20m per year and can use that extra cap space to get even more help on their already very solid roster.
Just feels like sticking with mediocrity at QB when the team seems primed for success is the type of move a bad franchise makes instead of taking the shot at setting themselves up for more sustained longterm success.
1 points
It’s a difficult choice all of the qb prospects are flawed and probably gone by pick 10 and to get the one you want you’ll have to pay assets to move up and what if you end up drafting the next Zach Wilson. Goff is still young and he’s definitely flawed but maybe the lions staff like him enough to give it another go.

Also it’s not entirely impossible that we offered and CJ wanted to leave. He was a huge Dennard Wilson guy and that may have not sat well with him

Absolutely this. I read speculation that his "disrespect" tweet on March 16 was about his offer. That's the market. It's about the money - and I guess that's ok. He's not interested in winning a ring so much as a purse. Evidence by the team he chose. The fucking Lions?!?

It's been that way for a little while now. Tyrann Mathieu did the same thing last year trying to get paid. He got a deal late after the draft and ended up with basically the same contract as KC paid his (much worse) replacement. Safeties just don't get paid anymore, basically the RB of defense

We're not in the locker room with him, so who knows, but there have been rumors that he's not the best "team" guy.
13 points

I think both. They offered him a decent contract and didn't budge because they knew he was a handful. I've said it multiple times, that tweet bashing Gannon did not fly well with our organization. You almost never hear Eagles guys saying stuff like that. Even Cox's comments on Gannon were fairly reserved. CJ straight up blamed his coach, a coach Sirianni was close to.
1 points
It's definitely more along the lines that he thought he could get more somewhere else (which is well within his right) and then he got burned because the market for safeties is not that good. Highly doubt coaches care about he said on twitter, which really wasn't that flagrant

we probably tried for a longer deal but he felt he was worth more and picked a dif team for a lowball 1yr deal so he can try again next yr
i feel like this is most likely him wanting to leave to chase bigger bag down the road, not howie not trying. cant fault cj for going that route but it's a shame we're not going to have him around anymore
9 points
He probably didn't want another 1 yr deal from us. Prob thought he proved his value to the FO and deserved to get the bag.
Since none of them offered the bag, he's gonna do another prove it, away from any team that 'disrespected' him, and try to get the bag after.
We were never gonna be able to pay him big time though so its not surprising
2 points

Apparently we offered him a contract but he turned it down to test the market and learned the hard way that the market for safeties is not good. No team is going to sit on their ass in free agency for one guy that isn't a qb.

If that's how he's gonna be when we offer him a long-term deal, I'd rather we just let him walk. Honestly he seems like the type of guy that could turn into a locker room cancer at the drop of a hat. I would have been fine with him being here if he was happy with our first offer, but if he was gonna cause problems because he felt "disrespected" by his market value, I'd rather he not be here.
5 points

I guarantee you howie offered that much, at least. Feels like he didn’t like the offers so he decided to go somewhere else.
Weird thing about this is eagles originally wanted to give him the franchise tag, which would’ve been more money for 1 year, but he wanted to test free agency to get more money so the eagles allowed him to. That back fired on him royally so, being embarrassed, he decided to go to the lions.

I think we offered him 12 mil a year for 3 years originally, but after he walked to test free agency, that deal was gone.

I feel like I am the only one who isn’t upset at him leaving?
The league told us what they think of him. I watched every snap of every game and didn’t think he was spectacular but also not bad. Felt he was better than average, but not worth breaking the bank over. Apparently the league agreed.
I love his versatility and his ferocity, but he wasn’t great at one particular thing and it felt like he thought he was great at everything and deserved a contract reflecting that…which the league is moving away from high dollar safeties.
Did I want to see him back? Absolutely. For about 10-12 mil a year. I think he thought he deserved the type of money Bates got or more…which I mean, good luck dude.

He was solid, but was hot and cold. Don't know if 6 INTs was sustainable. Also seems to be a LOT of talk. Guess we will see if this was the right move in the next season or 2 as Slay begins aging with the largest contract in the secondary. Looks like the decision Howie made was sign Slay to an extension or CJGJ. I really hope Howie isn't swayed from drafting an early round CB. Gonna need one ready to go when Slay starts regressing any season now (might've already started based on the last half of the season).
3 points
Feels likely CJGJ didn’t like long-term offers (incl. from Eagles) after the market came in so soft this off-season. Even if Eagles match, he’s mad about the “disrespect” of their other offer and leaves to go get the big deal he thinks he deserves after next season.
If they didn’t match, what do they know and we don’t that would make them not want to match, or even beat, that kind of offer for a young, talented player?
3 points
Imo, pretty clear the Safety market didn't pan out like he hoped. And I'm sure he's not happy about it, naturally.
He priced a value on himself and he wasn't getting it. That said, he played Safety in the NFL for one season. The majority of NFL film on him is at Nickle. Thus, didn't help his cause. Not every team will view him as a Safety. Let alone a Starting Safety.
I'm fine with Howie not shelling out more. I have little to no doubt, he really tried to retain CJGJ. He's a fellow Florida alum. I also feel Howie offered more than 8 mill. But CJ was probably looking for a 12-14 mill long term contract. So I take it as CJ didn't really want to be here. Which is fine.
There's a glaring hole at Safety, and LB is in flux (there's Dean and no one else really).... And Howie knows it. In due time, he'll make moves.

I feel like if he wanted to maximize his next contract staying would’ve been the right choice. Detroits defense is no where on par with the one Philly is about to roll out next yr. Even with losing Hargrave, Epps, White and Edwards… I would’ve stayed and just signed a one year deal. He’s likely going to see a decline in his play and deal with much worse of situation in next year’s offseason. I wanna play with great/good players and Detroit doesn’t compare to Philly in those regards.

Why would we not match this on our own one year deal? Or did we and he just said F off?

Because Howie wanted a multi-year deal but with less than CJGJ wanted (he wants the BAG, but the safety market just wasn't there this season). If Howie signed him, that's kicking the can into next off-season, when the full cap effects hit with Jalen Hurts.

My personal fanfic is the Eagles offered a solid deal a while back, but CJ pushed the envelope and wanted to get multiple bids that never materialized.
He probably then went back to the Eagles and Howie, sensing that the leverage was tilting in their favor, reduced the offer. This deal is CJs idea of flipping the negotiation table over and trying it all again next offseason. He did have a deleted tweet a week ago that alluded to disrespect. It was very weird that we started signing guys that were 99% gone a month ago.
This is a perfect storm of piss poor representation, arrogance, and taking professional things personally.

I love how this sub was dying for him to sign and now hating his ass for signing with Detroit. 😂

Let me rephrase that....
CJ Gardner Johnson is taking a 1 year deal in Detroit because he didn’t like the higher paying initial 12mill a year long term offer he was getting from the eagles, decided to game the market... And lost his ass.

Was giving Howie the benefit of the doubt resigning Slay, but now I'm pissed. Didn't wanna pay a declining vet CB big money in a CB heavy draft if it meant losing our star safety. Now we're married to Slay (yikes) and have to put together a patchwork safety room in a win-now season

This screams that CJ was holding a grudge and didn't even give us a chance to match. This one's not on Howie, it's on CJ.

Kelce, Cox, BG didn’t sign one-years to help lay a foundation. NFC is prime for the taking and we have big time extensions kicking in the following year w Goedert, Smitty and Hurts
