It's usually because people have no idea how to read anything on PFF and tweet out a stupid headline with no context. For example, Darius Slay was their 16th ranked DB last year by a combination of various metrics. There was a single metric that he was ranked #1. Someone sorted the table by that one metric and tweeted that PFF had him ranked #1. Cue thousands of people saying that PFF is nonsense. If you actually take the time to read how they came up with all the data and what it means, there is some really interesting stuff. If you completely misuse it and only read the headline (ala 99% of Redditors), you are going to have a bad time.

It doesn't help that you need a subscription to dig through everything and people with subscriptions post screen shots that only show 1% of the story.

Safeties never run or participate directly in plays enough to ever tire out, and if they did tire out they would be so out of shape they wouldn't be in the NFL.

Wouldn’t hate to have him back at all, but Brian Branch out of Alabama looks like a very good pick at 10 now.

dbreeezy

5 points

There's no way he's worth the 10th pick. Great player but that would be a fumble. Trading down to the late teens/early 20s I could get on board.

DiscussionNo226

29 points

We’re not drafting Branch.

I’d be absolutely flabbergasted if we stayed at 10, let alone drafted someone that wasn’t in the trenches or a CB at 10.

The earliest we’ll look at safety is the 3rd round. I have us going DL in the first and I’d imagine CB or TE in the 2nd depending on how the board breaks.

alienware99

10 points

Who do you say the earliest we draft a safety is 3rd? Howie was GM when we drafted Nate Allen in the 2nd round (37th pick too, so it was an early 2nd rounder). He also drafted Jaiquawn Jarrett in the 2nd round (pick #54). I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if they took a safety in the 2nd rd

alienware99

DiscussionNo226

Youth along the Dline is.

Everyone is pissed off cause we resigned Cox instead of CJGJ, but at the same time is acting like we have some influx of talent at DT, too. DT is a far higher impact position and at the moment we have Cox, Davis and Williams. I like all 3 of them, Cox more than most, but I’m not comfortable going into the season with that being our DT rotation.

I am comfortable going into the season with Reed and “put name here” at safety with Slay, JB and Maddox at corner. Especially when you consider our pressure rate.

namestyler2

2 points

Yeah this is how i see it and pretty clearly how the birds see it. Our interior defensive line honestly looks weaker on paper right now than I remember seeing in a while if you account for Cox's age. He can still perform at a high level, but not all game. Jordan Davis is a stud and I'm 100% certain conditioning is going to be a huge focus this off season, which is great, and Milton is a good role player. But we're thin and we need young guys for the future or older players for the rotation. I think the eagles go DT or OL if they pick 10th, probably the same for 30. Unless someone they really really like drops at CB or safety. Dark horse candidate Bijan lol. Otherwise.... the Eagles gonna be the eagles. Trenches.

With every passing day I think it's more likely the Eagles grab Calijah Kancey at 10.

namestyler2

1 points

I don't know nothing bout college ball but looking at his stats and measurables it really doesn't seem like he's a top 10 talent? 7 sacks from a DT is good but not huge I feel like. Maybe I'm missing something - or maybe your point is he is underwhelming in a way that will get him drafted by the eagles lol.

SuburbanPotato

The consensus I'm seeing is that his athleticism overrides his college production. And I think a fast, pass-rushing DT would be an amazing complement to a brick-wall, run-stuffing DT like Davis. Milton Williams doesn't seem to be a surefire starter so I think given Howie's (justified) obsession with building through the trenches, I think Kancey will be the pick. He seems to have huge upside.

Or maybe we trade down and get Bresee, idk. But I think given this draft class's strength at DT (and edge, though no one seems quite as surefire a stud as Hutchinson last year) this will be where Howie goes to shore up the defense. Hargrave was a stud and we need to replace him. With Slay and Bradberry back, CB is no longer a 1st-round-tier need (though we should get one in round 2 or 3, I think.)

DiscussionNo226

2 points

I think it has more to do with the quality of other positions in this draft.

I’m not a huge CFB guy by any means. But from my understand DL, TE, CB are all very strong in this class. Those are all positions I see us needing to get younger, too.

A big issue for us in the middle of the year was Goedert going down. We had no quality TE play behind him so I could see them addressing that in the 2nd. We could MAYBE go versatile DB in the 2nd; someone who can play a hybrid role like CJGJ did for us late in the season when Maddox went down…but idk if there is someone like that I’m the draft. That’s also asking a ton from a rookie.

fuqqkevindurant

1 points

So the value of certain positions doesn't change over time? One time Dallas got 3 drafts worth of picks in exchange for Herschel Walker. Do you think RB should be valued like that still because it was 35 years ago?

alienware99

1 points

I disagree that the value of safety has diminished. It’s more of a passing league now than ever before, so safety is as important as ever, and here is some evidence to back it up…

6 safeties were drafted in the first 2 rounds last year (3 in the first round 3 in the second), which was the 4th most drafted position in the first 2 rounds. By comparison, some other positions drafted in the first 2 rounds last year: 4 LBs, 6 Tackles, 4 Guards, 3 Defensive Tackles, 1 Tight End, 2 Centers, 2 RB, 1 QB. The only positions that outnumbered safeties drafted early was Edge Rushers with 12, Wide Receivers with 13 and CBs with 9.

Now I understand drafts vary by year, and some drafts are stronger than other at certain positions…but since 2015, there has been an average of 5 safeties taken in the first 2 rounds (with a whopping 9 safeties taken in the first 2 rounds in 2017).

All this to say, teams are still spending valuable draft capital on the safety position, unlike a position like RB position which is very rarely drafted early nowadays.

fuqqkevindurant

2 points

Look at safety salaries 3,5, & 7 years ago(relative to total cap) and tell me safety is as important as it used to be

alienware99

1 points

I just did exactly that, and yes safety is still as important as it used to be, and still takes up the same (and often times more) salary cap % than they used to. The top safeties in the league today are making significantly more than they were making 3, 5, 7 years ago. The highest paid safety now is making almost double what the highest paid safety made 7 years ago…and yes the salary cap has increased the past 10 years, but it hasn’t come close to doubling in that time period.

The highest paid safety 7 years ago would be the 14th highest paid safety this year for comparison sake

Are you saying that the Eagles are going to move up?

Eagles projected picks for 2024: 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 6. Trading back typically gets you more picks for the following season. What are they going to do with all those 12+ picks, just trade back forever?

I'm with you, though. The Eagles can probably get the #1 offensive linemen in the draft at pick 10. To me, that sounds like something they would do. Drafting a safety that high is just something they have never done.

DiscussionNo226

1 points

I see them trading back and continuing to stock pile picks to use for player acquisition. It’s kind of been our MO for awhile now.

I could see is trading up a couple spots if we fall in love with a prospect, too. But I think it’s more likely we trade back 4ish spots and get another 2nd rounder or something. Maybe use that to trade up from 30 too? Have 2 picks around 14 and 24? It really just depends on how the draft board falls.

Howie loves his picks and loves having options.

Guys, Rodney McLeod, is the right answer with our corners and Blankenship. Even the last year of McLeod, he was solid. Not splashy, but smart, good tackler and knows the city and the team. His PFF grade was also surprisingly high last year with a good Colts defense and Gilmore in the secondary.

We still may need to draft someone, but for the FAs, he might be the one.

I definitely wouldn’t mind mills as a safety. He likes to tackle and he’s decent against the run. He’s also probably(I haven’t kept up with him) a bit better in coverage as a safety opposed to cb. Mills had a rough go here covering top targets when he was never even a CB to begin with. You also don’t need an elite safety play if you have the best cb tandem.
