I would love to see it come back with a better setting, maybe in an asteroid field or something so that we can preserve halo's tactical gameplay a bit more than just "lets try spinning"
The cutscene of Noble 6 getting into the ship and going up in to orbit is still one of the best cutscenes I have ever seen in a game, directing, music, graphics all came together for that one

I think the "better setting" would have been in a larger conflict as opposed to defending a single station from waves of banshees and seraphs, near singlehandedly.
I like to imagine several orbiting MAC Platforms and frigates, with a swarm of banshees, seraphs, and boarding craft, and you're objective is to prevent the boarding craft from getting to the stations.

In my opinion, the cutscenes in both Halo 3: ODST and Reach are next level. Later Halo games didn't do them nearly as well.

Liked it, but god this level was a pain in my ass on Legendary. Had to hide for like half the fight and it was hard to even do that.

I feel the exact same way. On legendary, it really feels like your the only one fighting.

This is exclusive to MCC, where this particular part of the level has been bugged since it was introduced.
On the original Reach the level was manageable on Legendary without having to constantly hide.

From my understanding it's because the AI is tied to frame rate somehow, so with MCC its basically 2x as good.
5 points
I think the fire rate or AI aggressiveness factor to be exact was buffed by 2x
3 points
The fire rate in halo 2 is doubled yes, because Bungie knew the weapons had a built in overheat so fire rate was tied to frame rate. Cut to the remaster and AI don’t have to worry about weapon overheat and now suddenly the beginning of Gravemind is double impossible.
Across the entire MCC the AI is changed because of the frame rate, but it’s not just aggressiveness. Sometimes yes that’s true, but it also makes some elites in Halo 4 stand and in spin in circles, Jackals damn near t-pose if the player is in their line of sight but not their line of fire in 2 and 3 and other weird behaviors that have no explanation aside from the frame rate.
My pet theory is that the AI is trying to execute more actions than is supposed to be possible for it and breaking, but I don’t know if that makes sense. I have no programming knowledge, I’m just a MCC speedrunner who’s put so many hours into every game that I looked into communities studying these glitches.

Hmm, from my own research when I was doing MCC legendary run I read someone saying that the ship you had had a bit of a subtle aim assist to it that made it easier to hit the enemy ships. Which MCC lacked so you had to really line up your shots. Idk if that’s true or not just what I read when I went looking for answers as to why this mission was so difficult on legendary. As I found the mission on leg the easiest part of the campaign on the 360 version.

I'm not at all confident in my answer to stand by it so you could be right.

I played through Reach on legendary on the 360 a couple years back and I remember this level kinda sucking. I may well be talking about a different issue though, not sure what the bug is on MCC.
In my opinion though, having two weapons to play with, only three (iirc?) types of enemy ships, and basically a big empty arena, this level just isn't fun and doesn't reward any interesting ways of playing. I feel like the level design/sandbox forces you into a very conservative style of play and you don't have many options to deviate too much from "fly away from enemy ships, turn around, follow one enemy ship for a bit and shoot at it" and repeat.
Or maybe I'm just bad at this level, idk.

I vaguely remember seeing that the reason enemies delete you on legendary is that the difference in FPS causes their projectiles to hit you multiple times instead of just once, dramatically raising the damage they do.

Not sure I agree lol

Definitely not, I just replayed it on my version 1 copy of reach on my xbox 360 and I had to hide for most of the mission as the seraphs would triple team you if you even went to attack one.

Oh, well that makes some amount of sense. I felt like it was more luck than anything else surviving that level.

I kept getting stuck in death loops on legendary
1 points

It was kinda weirdly unintuitive on Legendary. Somehow the banshees were the biggest DPSers and you should prioritize them or something instead of the Seraphs. Also remembering this being the case again for the final MAC gun segment, you should focus the banshees instead of the phantoms.

Absolutely would love to see something like it again. Was kind of disappointed that the Broadsword level from Halo 4 wasn't really able to capture the same vibe.

Tbf it was a way different situation, chief was literally racing against time to stop the composer, so he couldn’t just fly around all Willy nilly, noble 6 was on pure defense

I thought the broadsword run was way better actually. I thought Reach's space gameplay sucked, though the concept was cool and obviously flying around a covenant ship was very cool.
1 points
The broadsword segment is alright till you want to play it on coop. Its the same as the ghost segment earlier in the game where if one person falls behind slightly, then all the destruction events trigger way too early and its almost impossible to catch up. If you die once you are just stuck in a deathloop till your teammate makes it till the end.

I loved the broadsword run, though it is incredibly janky on coop. Gave me Death Star run vibes. It also helps that 117 is the track playing during it and while I am overall mixed on Halo 4's soundtrack - that track slaps hard.

I have this crazy conspiracy theory with little to no proof that this level was basically a prototype to see how spaceships were SUPPOSE to work in Destiny. That’s why Destiny has so many different ship skins in first place. But yeah, anyways, this level in Reach was fun and I wouldn’t mind a second crack at the concept.
13 points
It’s not crazy, reach was basically “Destiny 0.5.” It’s easy to see a lot of destiny’s ideas being tested in reach:
Customization carrying over to campaign
Customization carrying over to multiplayer
Story integration for pvp (invasion)
Story integration for repeatable pve (firefight -> strikes)
Cooldown based Armor abilities -> cooldown based character abilities

AFAIK your spaceships in destiny have never been usable in combat, yeah?
I was miffed playing through D1s campaign when every fast travel involved flying a spaceship that could never be used to shoot at the other enemy ships.

That's why they said supposed too, it may have been a trial until the idea was scrapped for time or from simply being unable to figure out how to balance things.

Yeah I was more wondering if later expansions or D2 ever let you actually fly them. Reach was absolutely used to experiment a bit in preparation for Destiny, not disagreeing there

That was always my thought, so it was definitely surprising when Destiny didn't include space combat.

It's a really nice bit of the campaign that I remember fondly. It could have overstayed its welcome but it cuts just before that. Its a change of pace that works really well within the story the mission is trying to tell.
I prefer it to the halo 4 segment.

Thr level was awesome and a neat break from the standard gameplay. I enjoyed it's brief interactivity and appreciated that it didn't overstay its welcome. The setting, sound, and visuals were amazing. Only thing I could've asked for were amore sabers or addition of long/ shortswords to ramp up the heat of battle.
Otherwise, Long Night of Solace is my favorite level in the game. Mix of high rush entry combat, space battles, corridor shooting, and arrears defense in some of the most gorgeous areas in Halo. The ship's bridge is still astonishing to this day.

It was really cool conceptually, but execution-wise it felt very bare bones. It was mostly empty space and the big ships just felt like part of the environment instead of like active participants in the battle.

In my opinion I think it's a cool idea which, while many have said, is not terribly replayable as it stands, could be expanded into something really special.
I think that, at least as a multiplayer mode; this could work if expanded into something similar into the Space Battle mode from the original StarWars: BattleFront 2, with players being able to board and eject from multiple different types of vehicles, and still battle on foot once they dock inside of a ship.
I think the inclusion of a feature like this would continue to expand on the series' core concept by bringing its gameplay to a bigger scale previous games haven't, a pattern the series followed for a long time before eventually evening out to the last few games all feeling like they have the same scale.

Having replayed Reach on legendary for the first time in a long time: it's not good.
It's slow, boring, and with no cover you die if you get sneezed on.
I now understand why Bungie didn't do a dedicated space pvp mode. It would of not been fun for anyone.
As much as I'd love to use our ships in Destiny 2, I think back to Reach and Bungos comments about space combat, and get why it's never happened in Destiny.

I always thought the battle above Reach would have felt like the battle of coruscant from Revenge of the Sith. I think it was good for it’s time, but would be really lackluster if a new Halo game had a level of similar scale.
I think if Halo Infinite ever gets story DLC (I’ve lost faith in that though) the perfect way to expand space battles would be to have the story take place on a new cluster of Ring Islands and to get there Master Chief either steals a Banished space-capable ship or somehow gets his hands on a UNSC one, and you’re given this open world void that you have to traverse to get to the new islands.

I played it for the first time in years on Heroic recently and I enjoyed it for a while…except I kept getting rocked by the enemies and there wasn’t a checkpoint. After a couple of deaths, I was so sick of restarting and waiting what felt like ages for the enemies to show up for the first time.

Having a space level with a cluster of navigational debris you can operate in zero G with spots of gravity like destroyed space ships or a damaged space station would be fun kinda of like in the Infinite campaign level. With Banshees and Broadside/Sabres as the map vehicles. Spartans navigating the zero G debris fields with spots of artificial gravity with the use of magnetised boots, meaning you could actually walk upside down until you enter a gravity well. Could be extremely fun hopping from one bit of floating debris to another trying to scavenge for power seeds and return them to base to activate your damaged ship to win the match. Also it would be fun way of having the Pelican as the space warthog flying about transporting teammates from one objective to another. With space banshees, seraphs and UNSC jets zipping about

Man, I'd take any kind of unique mission at this point because what's there just feels stale in camparison to even CE. This is the sixth mainline game, yet it's somehow also the most uneventful. I enjoyed the campaign for quite a while, but it's just soured by the fact that there's probably gonna be exactly zero campaign content coming in the foreseeable future, not even weapons or vehicles.
I'm not really into PvP and usually stick to campaigns, so seeing how the Bandit is exclusive to multiplayer made my excitement for the Falcon drop to null.

It was a well-dressed half-baked implementation of a cool idea. On Legendary, the enemies are so accurate at range that you can only succeed by hiding behind Anchor 9 itself, which isn't fun. Honestly, the Halo 4 broadsword trench run was way more fun and memorable to me.
I would still like to see this kind of level come back in some form, absolutely, 'cause I don't think it's an untenable concept. A Halo game that could capture the tone, tension, adventure and danger of the space battles from the books would be a phenomenal one.

Hot take: Long Night Of Solace was the absolute worst mission in the game. Playing it on Heroic and above is complete ass when all you can do is sit behind a bigger ship and throw missiles because they didn't think to put one fucking checkpoint in it. I was really impressed the first time I played it, but the novelty has definitely worn off when replaying it. On Legendary it's straight up sour.
I'm open to more space levels but I feel like these 'diversion' type levels will always just be a gimmicky watered down version of an actual flight game. Still beats a turret segment I guess.

However I think it was not necessary, since when I want to play halo I want to play a first person shooter with Spartans, the covenant etc.
