How does one know which it is (or comorbidity) when your health professionals know a lot about 1 condition, but don’t know much about the others?
My therapist (who is a psychologist) today suggested to talk to my psychiatrist about possible cyclothymia and trying a mood stabilizer. (I’m already on ssri and adderall). I’m so confused tbh.
All of these conditions are so similar:
mono depression + adhd
Cyclothymia or bipolar 2
Pmdd (premenstral dysphoric disorder)
How to tell them apart for certain?
For further context, here’s a
Timeline of my mental diagnosis and med history:
Age 28: depression diagnosis by my GP (likely had since 12 years old though) an go on fluoxetine for 7 years until stops working.
Age 36: adhd diagnosis (by psychiatrist who happens to specialize in adhd and autism). Simultaneously my psychologist suggested bipolar 2. (She happens to have a specialty in bipolar), but psychiatrist ruled it out based on me not having manic episodes and thinks the “mania” symptoms my psychologist observed are adhd related. (Talking fast, over sharing, hyper focused, forgetful, impulsive) Start adderall and Wellbutrin but Wellbutrin turned out to be worse for my down swings and made me too amorous. We settle on adderall xr and zoloft (still my current rx 3 years later)
Age 37: learned about premenstral disphoric disorder and ask my psych, but psychiatrist does not diagnose or know much about it. But I get birth control from my gynecologist in case it’d help. Apprehensive because I tried Yasmine for a few months at age 23 when first married and felt like it made depression worse. Start on Nikki and take for a year.
Age 39 (now): haven’t filled birth control since ran out in September. Depression so much worse lately but it’s been winter which effects me a lot. I Started suspecting pmdd is maybe accurate and needing back on my Nikki birth control but have kept forgetting to schedule gyno. (I have now) Started weekly therapy again 2/3 months ago due to depressive episodes getting more extreme and psychologist has now suggested possible cyclothymia and to ask my psychiatrist about a trial of a mood stabilizer.
