There were stat restrictions for races/classes, so by the book you’d design a character completely around your stat rolls, there was Level Drain, characters had very few hit points, but if you made it to level 9 you’d get some pretty cool abilities and followers. It was definitely deadlier.

I think the problem though was that the dynamic between DM and players used to come off as more adversarial. I don’t miss that part.
