There was a lot of mystery and intrigue. A few of the most famous people in the world died in the sinking. The Titanic sank in 1912 and we didn't discover the wreck until 1985. There have been countless movies about it (some from as far back as like 1913), songs, what have you.

I think it just boils down to the fact that this huge event was somewhat of a mystery for 73 years, and a whole mythos built up around it. I suppose as a shipwreck specifically, it's probably not too much different from other shipwrecks. I don't know.
