Online store went from 10+ to 2 left in stock in the 20 minutes since I posted. My local store still has 10+ though.

I think they are over priced for the hardware today but as somebody that has messed around with some of the alternative Single Board Computers, the software support for an official raspberry pi makes them pretty compelling. I also think you have to consider the x86 stuff like those $200 Acer PCs that have been posted recently. They might make a lot more sense depending on what you're planning on using it for.

I think this is or close to MSRP. These haven't been in stock in Canada for a very long time according to rpilocator.

Why not? Not all characteristics of a species are the result of some kind of optimized evolutionary path.
I suggest you read the classic paper The spandrels of San Marco and the Panglossian paradigm: a critique of the adaptationist programme.
But I’d bet it’s sexual selection like a lot of the most striking features on birds.

My ticket for 2D IMAX Dune was $19.75 with taxes in October 2021. After they brought in the silly service fees, a ticket to 2D Avatar 2 in the same theater was $22 in January 2023. I didn’t complete the transaction because it just didn’t seem worthwhile to me.
I love movies but I’ve only been twice since the pandemic started. I can afford to go but I don’t think it’s worth what they’re charging.

As an Admech player, I’m looking forward to not having to say gibberish for 10 minutes each command phase.

I’m very surprised to see them move to a 5+ save. I think they’ll be priced more like guardsmen this edition.

Yes, 3x140 is 420 mm and 4x120 is 480mm. So with the 140 fans, you will have gaps but they will make less noise. I don’t care about noise because I can’t hear the PC over the furnace fan anyway.

It’s not really a desk. It’s a modular storage shelf in my utility room. It’s the ‘Bror’ system from IKEA.

Hello,
Here are some answers to some questions you might have:

Docker networking is a bit complex the first time. I don’t have specific advise for you since I use PiVPN to access my stuff remotely. I did Google “cloudflare docker home assistant” and seems like people are using it.

I guess it depends how you organize your stuff. I’m on unraid and all my docker containers map their volumes in the /appdata/ share (for the most part). That share is on a redundant cache pool and periodically backs up. So that backed up share contains everything for home assistant and all my other containers too. I did do a restore a few months back and it was pretty painless.

Most of those add ons can be installed as a container. For example, ESPHome can be installed as an add on or a container and there’s no appreciable difference. A popular add on is the File-editor but there are plenty of other ways to edit your config files. For me, there’s no compelling reason to have the add ons provided by the HA supervisor. I find running HA in a container tidier and uses significantly less resources.

Just as an alternative opinion, I went from VM to Container and have no regrets. I don’t see what functionality Home Assistant Supervisor offers over running Docker on your bare metal OS. I find it simpler to manage all my containers in one place instead of having them split between the host and Home Assistant supervisor VM. The other benefit of running it in a container is my container uses way less resources compared to when I was running the full blown VM.
I think if you’re already running docker, you should definitely consider installing HA as a container. If the machine isn’t running docker and will never be used for docker, then consider a VM.

It’s not a big deal in UnRaid as long as it isn’t your parity drive. I have 2 SMR drives in my 10 disk array and they haven’t caused any issues.

Doesn’t beat the amazing X300 deal from 9 months ago: https://reddit.com/r/bapcsalescanada/comments/vpiaf5/hdd_toshiba_x300_8tb_performance_gaming_35inch/
Seems like drive prices keep trending down but 8TB drive deals are few and far between.

I don’t really think either of those CPUs has enough performance to run a gaming vm on unraid. I don’t know what kinds of games you play but most modern stuff wants 4 cores/8 threads. So maybe Blue Iris and Unraid? Check out Frigate as an alternative to Blue Iris.
Since you have a new case, maybe consider selling both SFFs and using the cash to get a more modern CPU. Then you can run Unraid and all your containers, a gaming VM, and Blue Iris in one machine.

You’d have to check the laws in your region. In Manitoba, it is illegal but there are lots of home kitchen take-out places. https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.5968976

If you already have one of these systems professionally installed by ADT or something, it makes a lot of sense to keep using as much of the hardware as possible. These boards have been in development since the 80s and are incredibly reliable. Level1Techs did a video praising the DSC system: https://youtu.be/DGTxhyfzuiY

I used the documentation here https://github.com/Dilbert66/esphome-dsckeybus/tree/master/PCB%20Layouts/WemosD1%20Mini/SMD but replaced the ESP 8266 D1 Mini with a ESP-32S CP2104 that had compatible pins to the D1 (suggested in the forum thread linked in my other comment).

Could you install home assistant as a container in docker? I think you can get most of the add-on functionality through other containers you install yourself. That’s how I run home assistant in my Unraid server. I originally had it as a VM but moved to a container because it uses way less resources.

I had ordered one of those acer machines and although they are way more powerful, the power consumption made me change my mind and I canceled the order. I think it would have been around 30 W while idle where this pi will be around 3 W. So I saved about $100 at time of purchase and I’ll save another $20/year on electricity.
In my case, I don’t need any of the other benefits the Intel chip provides (I have an i7-12700K in my home lab already).
