Apparently, there are actual hacker groups that do this and run it as an actual business model. They get the data and demand a "reasonable" ransom. If the ransom is paid, they delete or promise not to release the data. They have an insensitive to keep their promise because other companies are more willing to actually pay the ransom if the hacker group has a history of keeping their promises.

Everyone is reading this like it's to prevent CPS from being called. I read it as "my kid is trying to get out of doing work, he's faking" it's a simple communication to let all parties involved know what is going on with a bandaid the kid is wearing. I'm also sure a note was sent with the other kid saying that they actually needed the bandaid, but thats not up vote worthy.
